A Guide For Blue, Green, and Red Science Packs Production in Factorio (2024)

While you get to make a lot of things inFactorio, one of the most important items you will need areScience Packs. These packs for them basis of the tech tree research progression in-game. The most common science packs that you will find yourself using areBlue,Green, andRed (Red being the easiest to produce).

We briefly touched upon science packs in ourbeginner’s guide toFactorio, but this guide is going to give you the low down on what goes into each pack and what level of research you are going to need to make everything.

How to Produce Blue Science Packs inFactorio

Out of the three types of science we are going to look at in this guide, Blue Science is the most demanding. Also referred to as science pack 3, this is the third tier of research and is used to advance existing technologies.

From the outset, you will needAdvanced Circuits,Electric Mining Drill, and anEngine Unit. You will also need to research Advanced Electronics.

All of the main components for Blue Science pack will require you to use Assembly Machine 2, as the recipes consist of 3 or more materials. So let’s break down those components to see how complex Blue science packs are.

Advanced Circuit

About halfway through the game, you will find yourself in need of a lot of high-end technology — andAdvanced Circuits are used in almost all of them! They are a very crucial part of the end game, and as such, they do require quite a bit to make.

While the recipe itself seems relatively easy, it does require Plastic Bars. These can only be crafted if you have done a bit more research:

Electric Mining Drill

We are already quite familiar with the Electric Mining Drill. They are one of the first things you upgrade once you have started to generate electricity.

Engine Unit

TheEngine Units in-game are mainly used to create vehicles — so it makes sense that the higher tier technologies require them, as you will start to move things around the map and create trucks and cars etc.

They require theEngine technology to have been researched, but only need pretty basic materials to make. Once you have the tech and the materials, these Engine Units will open up a whole new aspect of the game.

Green Science Pack Production

Before you are able to produce Blue Science packs, you are going to have to makeGreen Sciencepacks. Green Science (or science pack 2) make up the bulk of the earlier stages of tech tree progression. You need to prepare to makeLOTS of them!

A Guide For Blue, Green, and Red Science Packs Production in Factorio (6)Green Science recipe

Looking at them, you’d be forgiven for thinking that because they only require two pretty standard components, they are easy and quick to make — but unfortunately you would be wrong. Green Science packs needbasicInsertersandTransport Belt pieces.

Let’s break these down…

Inserters

A Guide For Blue, Green, and Red Science Packs Production in Factorio (7)Inserter recipe

Inserters require specific technology to make them, and are one of the earliest items you can craft. As you can see, they are made of basic components — but because they’re composed of 3 items, for automated production, they can only be made in anAssembly Machine 2(which you get when you unlocked theAutomation 2 technology).

  • Note: For efficiency purposes, it is recommended that you aim to get this technology as soon as you can.
Transport Belt

A Guide For Blue, Green, and Red Science Packs Production in Factorio (8)Transport Belt recipe

Again,Transport Belts only require basic components and can be created straight away. Since they only require two components to make them, they canbe made via anAssembly Machine 1— which you get from researchingAutomation.

Red Science Pack Production

The easiest has been left until last! They require only two components, and one of them comes straight out of a furnace. Red Science needsCopper PlateandIron Gear Wheels. The wheels can be made straight from iron plates.

Automated production of Red and Green Science is relatively straightforward. The majority of components can be crafted as soon as you have researched Automation. You just have to wait until you have researched the next level of it to be able to make inserters in an assembly machine. Blue, on the other hand, will take considerably longer to sort out.

There are plenty of blueprints and information on how to create an effective automated production of all the science packs — but before diving in and copying another’s design, we highly recommend that you go and try to design one yourself so that you know how it works. Also, every map is different, so yours might end up having the raw materials in totally a different place!

Once you have nailed your science pack production, you can then begin to look at Labs and progressing up the tech research tree!

Time to get researching in the Lab

FAQs

What is the perfect ratio for science Factorio? ›

The ratio needed to keep science production in sync is 5:6:5:12:7:7, or: 5 Automation science pack assemblers.

How much of each type of science do you need in Factorio? ›

An approach to how much science packs you should produce are the ratios of their production. If one tries to produce the same amount of every science pack, because they are consumed this way, he will end up with 5:6:5:12:7:7 (red, green, grey, blue, purple, yellow) assemblers.

What is the ratio of red and green science in Factorio? ›

Almost all research that needs only red and green science needs an equal number of red and green science packs. Red science takes 5 seconds to craft, green science takes 6. So a perfect balance is ratio of 5 red science assemblers to 6 green science assemblers.

How many science packs does Factorio have? ›

There are a total of seven science packs: level 1 (red), level 2 (green), level 3 (blue), military (grey), production (purple), high-tech (yellow) and eventually space science (white).

What is the iron gear to red science ratio Factorio? ›

Likewise, red sceince packs take 5 seconds and consume 1 iron gear, so 1 red science factory should consume 0.1 iron gears per second. So it follows that you should be able to supply 10 red science pack factories with 1 iron gear factory.

Is Factorio more complicated than satisfactory? ›

Factorio can get a lot more complicated than Satisfactory in pretty much every aspect. On a surface level, both games are very simple; you make resources go into a processing building, and then make them go to a different processing building.

Are Factorio worlds endless? ›

Maximum map size and used memory

This makes the world essentially endless for practical purposes. The generated chunks are fully mapped and stored in the player's RAM, which is the practical limiting factor of exploration.

How long does it take to 100% Factorio? ›

If you're a gamer that strives to see all aspects of the game, you are likely to spend around 221 Hours to obtain 100% completion.

Why is the water green in Factorio? ›

Any water near the source of pollution will turn green, which is a visual-only effect. The effect can be turned off by disabling animated water in the graphics settings.

What is the formula for Factorio lab? ›

Calculating the number of science packs needed per second is straightforward: ERS = (1 + B[r] ÷ 100) × (1 + M[r] ÷ 100)

What is the split ratio Factorio? ›

1 full input belt gets split into two 50% full belts which get split into 4 belts that are each 25% full. Belt balancers utilize the mechanic that splitters output items in a 1:1 ratio onto both their output belts. That means that a splitter can be used to put an equal amount of items on two belts.

Is Factorio research infinite? ›

Infinite technologies. While most technologies in Factorio are either one-off or have a finite, relatively small number of levels available, a few are "infinite", meaning the player can research as many levels as they can afford.

What module is best Factorio? ›

Module
  • For more products per second a speed module should be used.
  • For more products per input resource a productivity module should be used.
  • For more products per watt of energy an efficiency module should be used (except in rare cases when productivity modules are also used - then a speed module might be better).

What is the space science ratio Factorio? ›

To get Space Science (no productivity modules in the silo); a rocket needs 1000 of each component of the rocket part + the requirements for the satellite. This is a ratio of (1100 * 20) : (1050 * 30) : (1000 * 30) or simplified of 44 : 63 : 60. Where 20 and 30 are the respective crafting speeds.

What is the engine ratio in Factorio? ›

Electric miners take 2 time units, engines take 10 time units to craft (how many seconds is a time unit will again depend on assembler crafting speed). So, to make 1 item in unit time, you'd need 2 assemblers for miners and 10 assemblers for engines. Therefore the ratio is miners:engines = 2:10.

How to queue science factorio? ›

Double clicking (Double-pressing Y or A on Nintendo Switch) or using SHIFT + Left mouse button ( ZR + A on Nintendo Switch) on any research in the tree or the list on the left will also add it to the queue. This is particularly useful to queue prerequisites without focusing them in the technology tree.
